Wildlife Wednesday Free Event, Sept. 9: Hummingbird Mysteries -- Solved and Unsolved

Biologist Carlos Martinez del Rio will speak on "Hummingbird Mysteries --  Solved and Unsolved" at the Sept. 9 "Wildlife Wednesday" presentation. 

Martinez del Rio, a member of the board of the New Mexico Wildlife Federation, intends to leave it up the audience which of two possible topics he will address at the free event.

Martinez del Rio's first possible topic would be a presentation on hummingbirds' energy development and hearts. The other possible topic would be a presentation on hummingbird tongues, and how they can taste sweet substances. 

Here's the biography Martinez del Rio submitted for the talk:

"Martinez del Rio grew up in a cattle ranch in Northern Mexico surrounded by cow dung and books. After a vagrant interlude that included surfing, spearfishing, and guiding American naturalists throughout Mexico and Costa Rica, he got a PhD from the University of Florida. He held professorial jobs at Princeton, the University of Arizona, and the University of Wyoming. In these places he studied bats, hummingbirds, and mistletoes as a naturalist with very fancy technologies and big gadgets. He also taught medical students about how kidneys, hearts, and guts work. He recently retired to Silver City, NM, where he pursues, more or less unhindered, his disorganized passions for hummingbirds, bats, wilderness and more recently mules."

Whichever topic Martinez del Rio addresses, he's certain to be animated and well informed. Make plans to attend this exciting free event.
