Protecting your outdoor way of life since 1914

Who We Are

The New Mexico Wildlife Federation is New Mexico’s first and most effective conservation advocate. We are dedicated to protecting New Mexico’s wildlife, habitat, and outdoor way of life.

We bring diverse groups together, focusing on common interests, to make the big changes that make a difference for our members.

Bull elk in New Mexico. We are the voice for New Mexico’s conservation-minded sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts in the New Mexico state legislature and governor’s office, as well as in the U.S. Congress. We’re the watchdog and advocate for issues that matter to you.

History & Past Accomplishments

Founded in 1914 by Aldo Leopold and other conservation–minded sportsmen, the New Mexico Wildlife Federation led the way in bringing back elk, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, wild turkey, and other wildlife species to New Mexico.  We spearheaded efforts to save species like pronghorn from local extinction.  We were also instrumental in designating the world’s first wilderness area:  the Gila Wilderness.

Key Priorities

Access: In the field. The New Mexico Wildlife Federation protects your right to responsibly access public lands. NMWF is also expanding access by helping to initiate and expand a NM Department of Game & Fish program, Open Gate, to increase responsible hunting and fishing opportunities on private lands by offering voluntary incentives to landowners who open their lands to responsible public use. This win-win program is already expanding your public hunting opportunities in New Mexico.

In addition, you can report problems accessing public land to us. Whether it's a locked gate, incorrect private land postings, an interaction with a landowner, or some other problem, we want to know. We're collecting information about these types of incidents so that we can bring them to the NM Department of Game & Fish, state land office, and other public land agencies. We want to make sure that our public lands are open to the public.

Habitat: The New Mexico Wildlife Federation stands up for top-quality wildlife habitat and for our rights as conservation-minded hunters & anglers in the face of threats such as irresponsible oil & gas development, offroad vehicle abuse or irresponsible grazing practices. NMWF is committed to ensuring that our professional natural resource managers in the Department of Game and Fish and other agencies have the skills and resources to manage our wildlife habitats and populations free from damaging political interference. NMWF believes in working cooperatively with farm and ranch owners to improve wildlife habitat and expand public outdoor opportunities.

Youth: Youth across the nation are losing their connection to the natural world with damaging consequences to their physical and mental health. Youth who spend time outdoors have higher math and science scores and are healthier all around. In the field. The New Mexico Wildlife Federation is committed to engaging the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts, and ensuring a high-quality of life and for future generations through a strong connection to the great outdoors.
